Method of drying whole coffee beans

Day post: 27-06-2016
The method of drying whole coffee beans brings high economic efficiency for farmers.

Plucking and leaving the coffee beans on the yard until dry

  • No need to grind the fresh bean, less black coffee if it accidentally rains (but also not withstand the prolonged rain)
  • If coffee beans are dried on the yard with good ability to drain water, the possibility of blackening due to rain is lower than coffee of grinding and drying.
  • The drying time is long to protect and plow
  • The longer coffee bean stay on the ground, the more meet the rain. It will take more days to plow and dry
  • High risk of loss due to theft and rainwater drifting on steep areas
  • When the price is high, there is not enough dry coffee to sell. When the coffee bean is dry, the market has too many coffee suppliers.

Grinding to dry is quick drying.

  • It is quick to dry. There are 3 good times of sun to overcome the disadvantages of drying whole beans.
If unfortunately hit the rain only once, the risk of being black coffee is very large.
  •  It is required to be sunny to dry. If not, the coffee will take mold very fast.

The method of drying whole beans

To overcome the disadvantages and promote the advantages of both methods above, we propose to the farmer’s two methods of drying whole beans.
If you have to choose one of the two methods: drying on yard of using dryer, we suggest investing in dryer because it is clear that the dryer is not dependent on the sky. The time to dry coffee beans is only within 12 -16 hours per batch. We also use coffee crust to be burning material. Now, there are two methods of drying whole beans with the following data:

1- Static Kiln (suitable for most farmers)
Static kiln with the capacity of 150-200kg of fresh coffee per square meter burns with coffee pods. The grinded coffee is enough to burn and dry for same amount of beans.

Blowers must use a special structure according to centrifugal fans; it’s capable of blowing heat 100-200 degrees through the mesh of static drying. We have seen some people use this axial fans in this case, it is not correct because axial fans with very low compression ratio will not achieve the desired effect.
The motor for pulling a fan may use a motor or a generator according to actual conditions. The disadvantage of a static kiln is people have to turn by hand, every 2-3 hours to turn it around. But only after 12-16 hours, the coffee is dry enough to be indestructible or black.

Making the grid for static kilns is possible wherever mechanical is possible, the problem is choosing the right mesh drying net, the grid must be sure to use it for a long time. One thing that you need to note is: because it is a direct incinerator that use coffee husks to dry whole beans not coffee pods to dry the coffee beans will make the coffee beans smelly. If you want to dry coffee by direct incinerator, you need to use burning coal.

Depending on the situation of the farmers, you should choose to build the size of static dryer and incinerator to save money, so you can ask us.

2- Drum Dryer
The only disadvantage of a drum dryer is more expensive than a static dryer, but the dryer has many other advantages as below:
  • Drying without turning
  • Drying coffee cherries, paddy coffee and coffee beans
  • The quality of drying is the same regardless of the skill of the workers. The whole beans drying for a drum dryer are simple. It is pouring coffee and burning
the incinerator and then run the dryer, drying time is equivalent to static drying.
